Consciouness is a constant flow. Since its a flow, it involves spaciousness. Awareness, an aspect of consciousness can't be static and is all pervading ie it is a flow. From this basic consciousness, there are radiations, such as love, peace, joy. These radiations flow along with awareness. When these radiations deposit at a particular space in consciousness, there arises a mind.
When mind arises, flow of awareness continues but because of accumulation, incarnation takes place, depending on the kind of accumulation (whether that of a human being, animal, etc). Since incarnation involves mind (which is nothing but an accumulation), the awareness of mind is limited to the contents of the deposit and not that of composite awareness. With interaction between other incarnations and overall environment involving matter and thought forms (undissolved thought forms), mind continues to become thick and there forms a soul.
At the time of completion of a particular incarnation, mind again has to undergo a process of transition and dissolve itself again into its source consciousness. If it is able to do so, consciousness has got rid of the accumulations to a large extent. At that particular space where a piece of mind originated and incarnated, another incarnation may be needed to cleanse the accumulation completely. But whether in form of basic mind or a programmed soul, it depends on the accumulations/impressions that the incarnated has made on itself.
That is why it is said "Consciousness has no beginning and no end". True. This flow can't have any beginning or end.
That is why when a person gets enlighted, s/he is able to perceive herself/himself as a space in which all experiences arise and dissolve. At the spaces where that particular experience (mind) has incarnated, the enlighted individual perceives as that incarnation. At the space which is free of any incarnation at the moment, the individual experiences peace and all the aspects and radiations of the base consciousness.
